Artist Statement
Neil Jenkins is an artist whose practice is heavily engaged with electronic media, language, programming and networked communication. He is particularly interested in the use of real-time data and networks (both real and virtual) toward creating hybrid interactive installation pieces.
Neil began creating interactive pieces and games in the early 1980s, as a self-taught assembly language programmer on the Commodore 64. Progressing onto 16-bit computers in the 1990s, he started developing interactive audio visual toys and interfaces, with early work being distributed on Floppy Disk, CD-ROM and finally the Internet on his website devoid.co.uk in 1999.
Alongside his personal practice, curation and collaborations with other artists, Neil works as a commercial interactive/web designer and developer and in recent years has developed a series of bespoke content management systems for clients including Fonterra Food Services (Australia), Knowle West Media Centre and The School of Creative Arts, University of the West of England He also has a wealth of experience consulting for arts based organisation in the area of new media.
Neil also teaches and has worked as a Senior Lecturer in interactive design and new media at Bath Spa University, Visiting Lecturer at The University of the West of England and Researcher Cardiff School of Art and Design
He has worked extensively with several artists collectives including ...here nor there..., an international artists collective seeking to draw connections and collaboration between cultures via the internet and shared media resources and Furtherfield, a London/net based artists collective, using the internet and networked technology as a focal point for creative discourse, events and production.
Born in the UK, Neil now lives and works in Australia and currently sits on the Board of Directors for d/Lux/MediaArts.
